History
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles,
California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective
was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the
Hispanic community.

The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established
two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as
reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent
network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

Chapter History

A number of Fresno Latino professional engineers saw the need for an organization such as
SHPE in the Fresno area. They applied and received entry into SHPE in 1987. The interim
Professional Board consisted of Raul Garcia Jr. as President and Rudy Garcia as V.P.
Secretary was Miguel Hidalgo and Treasurer, Luis Herrera. Gus Lerma, Region 1 V.P. at the
time, was instrumental in helping Fresno build a strong foundation. Personal congratulations
calls came in from Richard Jimenez, Rodrigo Garcia, and Ricardo Pinos who were part of the
founders of SHPE Professional in 1974.
