2009 Fresno Science Engineering Academy

The 2009 Fresno Science Engineering Academy (FSEA) will be a three week; non-residential
program held in June at California State University Fresno campus.  The program will serve
100 middle and high school students from the California Central Valley. The goals are simple
and focused on providing enhancement to critical academic skills that will give the student a
better understanding of their desired major as well as the challenges of a college prep
program of study. Specific goals include:

• To improve students’ knowledge of mathematics (basic math through algebra)
• To improve students’ knowledge of science and engineering
• To teach students effective communication skills
• To assist students to develop a personal statement essay
• To improve students’ knowledge of the professional engineering work force

The program will consist of three components: academics, team building, and real life
applications of engineering. Students will spend their mornings in sessions that focus on
enhancement of academic skills in Science and Mathematics. In the afternoons, students will
spend their time participating in enrichment activities that address teamwork, leadership
development, and college assistance workshops. Students will tour the host campus as well
as company sponsored field trips, where the students are able to learn from professional
engineers on how mathematics and science relate to the field trip.

How can you help?

In addition to monetary support, we also need companies who would like to host a tour for the
students, school supplies, USB Keys, and calculators.

Please contact one of the
officers to find out how you can become a sponsor.

High School Visits

The High School visits are done 4 times a year and are targeted to low income rural school in
the Fresno Area.  The goals are simple and focused on providing knowledge of engineering,
college, and SHPE. Specific goals include:

• To improve students’ knowledge of science and engineering
• To improve students’ knowledge of college and financial aid
• To improve students’ knowledge of the professional engineering work force
• To improve students’ knowledge of SHPE

The program will consist of four components: team building, college, engineering, and SHPE.
In addition, we challenge the students to submit an essay about how an organization such as
SHPE can help them succeed in college.  The winning entries receive an IPod Nano!   The
reason for this is two-fold.  One, engaging the students to think about our visit even after we
have left and about college, and, two, knowledge to the professionals on how to help the high
school students in the future.

How can you help?

In addition to monetary support, we also need give away items for the students.  Any company
sponsor will have company recognition at the visit with logo displayed.

Please contact one of the
officers to find out how you can become a sponsor.
